Breathable vs non-breathable: which Cast PE backsheet does your SKU need?

The choice isn't about quality — it's about which job the absorbent system is doing.

By Rhyfeel Engineering

Breathable Cast PE backsheets are not "better" than non-breathable ones. They're different — engineered for different absorbent systems, different wearer durations, and different price points.

When breathable wins

  • Long-wear products (overnight diapers, adult pant-style).
  • Premium SKUs where "cloth-like" feel is the brand cue.
  • Hot, humid climates where wearer comfort is the leading complaint.
  • Products with low-to-medium SAP loading that benefit from vapor release.

When non-breathable wins

  • Short-duration single-use products (hospital underpads, light bladder pads).
  • Value-tier SKUs where price-to-perform is the priority.
  • Products whose absorbent core is engineered to retain moisture inside.
  • Outer-wrap and packaging-grade applications.

When you need both

  • Most converters run both — premium SKUs use breathable, value SKUs use non-breathable, sometimes on the same line with a quick changeover.
